As Party Leaders Dither, Corporate Dem Runs To Fox News To Smear Rep. Ilhan Omar

The Young Turks (4/12/19)

“Rep. Max Rose (D-NY) ripped his Democratic colleague Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her “offensive” comments about 9/11 during an appearance on Fox News today.

“Let’s be very clear about this, this is insensitive and it’s offensive,” Rose told Fox News anchor Dana Perino this afternoon. “On 9/11 radical terrorists attacked us. New York City lost thousands of people. My district, Staten Island and South Brooklyn, lost hundreds of cops, firemen, first responders, more than any other district in America.”

The comments Rose condemned were made by Omar during an event for the Council on American-Islamic Relations severals weeks ago.

“CAIR was founded after 9/11, because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar said — a quote that widely criticized by conservatives for supposedly downplaying the attack.”

“Her Life Is in Danger”: Dems Urged To Speak Out After Trump’s Latest Attack On Ilhan Omar

By Andrea Germano
Common Dreams (4/13/19)

Members of Congress are being urged to speak out against President Donald Trump’s latest attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar—one some are characterizing as an incitement of violence against her.

The call is in response to an edited video the president posted on Twitter Friday afternoon. As of this writing, the president has that tweet pinned.

In the video, a short phrase the Minnesota Democrat uttered at a speech last month—”some people did something”—is repeated three times, interspersed with footage of the aftermath of 9/11 in an effort to portray her as minimizing the attacks.

The manipulation of the comments she made to the Los Angeles chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) comes after they were already pounced upon this week by some Republican lawmakers and right-wing media, who used them incite hatred. It also caps off a week in which Trump encouraged the idea that Omar is somehow “assaulting Jews” and in which Omar faced a death threat from a Trump supporter.

“The President is inciting violence against a sitting Congresswoman—and an entire group of Americans based on their religion,” — Sen. Elizabeth Warren

“Trump’s attacks on Representative Ilhan Omar are horrendous and continue to put her life in danger after she has already faced numerous death threats in recent months,” said Waleed Shahid—communications director for progressive advocacy group Justice Democrats— in a statement Saturday. Democratic Party leaders, he added, should do more “to fight back on behalf of the new generation of leaders under constant attack by the right-wing war machine.”

“There’s a 200 mph ideological right-wing war machine coming after Ilhan Omar” as well as fellow freshmen members of Congress and women of color Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), he told MSNBC on Thursday.

Pressley was among the progressive lawmakers denouncing the president’s video compilation. “The occupant of the @WhiteHouse is putting her, her family, her team & Muslim Americans across the country in jeopardy,” she said.

While Speaker Nancy Pelosi steered clear of mentioning Omar by name in her reaction to Trump’s tweet, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass. ) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)—both contenders for the 2020 Democratic ticket—were clear in joining the chorus of condemnation. …

Rashida Tlaib Slams Democrats For Silence On Trump’s Islamophobic Attacks On Ilhan Omar

The Michigan congresswoman has a message for Democratic leaders: Don’t celebrate diversity while ignoring Islamophobia.

By
HuffPost (4/13/19)

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) offered harsh criticism to some of her Democratic colleagues on Saturday over their silence on the recent attacks aimed at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) who, like Tlaib, is Muslim.

“They put us in photos when they want to show our party is diverse,” Tlaib tweeted Saturday. “However, when we ask to be at the table, or speak up about issues that impact who we are, what we fight for & why we ran in the first place, we are ignored.”

The attacks on Omar reached a new level one day earlier when President Donald Trump tweeted a video of a speech on Muslim civil rights the freshman congresswoman gave last month, interlaced with news footage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Earlier in the week, the New York Post, owned by conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch, published a controversial cover featuring a quote by Omar printed over an image of the twin towers burning.

Tlaib and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who are also both freshman Democrats, were among the first members of Congress to denounce the conservatives’ Islamophobic attacks aimed at Omar.

Soon after, other prominent Democrats echoed their support for Omar, including 2020 candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Beto O’RourkePete Buttigieg, Julián Castro and Jay Inslee, HuffPost previously reported.

As HuffPost’s Rowaida Abdelaziz pointed out, the Democratic Party hasn’t had a unified response to Islamophobia, and some leaders have yet to respond publicly to the attacks on Omar.

Top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler did not respond to Abdelaziz’ request for comment on Saturday. …
